Why do mechanical hard disks fail?
Hard disk drives (HDD) have been around since the mid 1950’s and rely on rotating metal disks and electromagnetic read/write heads to store and retrieve data. As the disk (platter) spins, the read/write head hovers above it at at height of roughly 5 nanometers. For reference, the average human hair is about 25000 nanometers.
The capacities these disks can hold is phenomenal, now up into the tens of terrabytes, but their biggest pitfalls are speed and reliability. Due to the mechanical way in which they access data, they have an unknown finite lifespan and can easily be overburdened in disk intensive tasks, making them feel even slower. They can also be damaged by kinetic shock when bumped or dropped, allowing the disk and head to come into direct contact. In fact, because the head operates so closely to the platter, a foreign object between them as small and insignificant as a fingerprint can cause catastrophic failure.
Do solid state disks fail and why?
From day one, solid state disks (SSD) have a known finite lifespan.
Solid state disks use flash memory chips to store data. Each chip has a number of cells and in these cells are a number of addressable “blocks” (between one and three) in which data can be stored. When all blocks have been used, older blocks must be erased so they can be re-used. Each time a block is erased marks the end of one program/erase (p/e) cycle.
There are various different types of flash memory used in SSD’s and each type has a different number of p/e cycles it can perform. The more blocks a cell has, the less p/e cycles it can perform, but the cheaper it is to manufacture and therefore buy. Manufacturers use clever algorithms to avoid unnecessary reads and writes and make sure all cells wear equally. Manufacturers will usually guarantee several years of highly intensive usage, orders of magnitude above the average usage of most users and thus SSD’s will usually last much, much longer.
